Frequently Asked Questions

Our personalised coaching programmes cater to surfers of all abilities and operate across the globe. To find out more, please read the FAQs below. If you can’t find the answer to your question, please drop us a line.

WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

The Art Of Surfing is based in Mount Maunganui, one of New Zealand’s surf capitals. We run all our private sessions and after-school squad programmes here. However, we also have other coaching programmes around New Zealand and overseas, and we offer online video coaching and courses. Head to our coaching options section to see what’s available.

What Level Do I Have To Be To Join Your Camps?

Each of our camps is aimed at a different level of ability. We have a guide on our website under the ‘What level am I?’ tab to help you figure out your ability level. You can then check the level indicator for the camp you’re considering, to make sure it’s right for you.

DO YOU COACH COMPLETE BEGINNERS?

No. Our coaching programmes cater to a wide range of abilities, but they are aimed at people who can already surf. We have some requirements for surfers who want to join our scheduled surf programmes, to make sure the coaching will be a good fit.

Not sure if you have enough experience? You should feel comfortable that you meet each of these criteria:

– Competent swimming ability and ocean awareness

– Ability to paddle out the back unassisted in 2-4ft surf

– Have your own fibreglass shortboard/s

If you don’t meet these requirements, we might still be able to arrange private coaching tailored to your level.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE’S NO SURF?

We encourage surfers not to get too picky about the forecast because perfect waves aren’t necessarily best for coaching.

If conditions are unsurfable and we need to postpone the programme, we’re more than happy to reschedule for a future date.

WHAT’S YOUR REFUND POLICY?

All bookings outside 30 days can be confirmed with a non-refundable 30% deposit via our website. The balance must be paid in full 14 days before the start of the programme. In some instances, we might credit your fee for later use, but this will be on a case-by-case basis.

CAN I START MY OWN CAMP?

Yes. If you have a group of four or more surfers, we can create your own private camp on dates that suit you. Pricing for all private camp options can be found on our Private Camps page.
